Usability of Accessibility Tools for Low-Literate Users

This research project explores the usability of accessibility tools on smartphones for low to illiterate users. It aims to identify the challenges faced by individuals with limited literacy in interacting with smartphones and evaluate the effectiveness of existing accessibility features in the context of security and privacy technology, such as voice assistance, text-to-speech, and simplified interfaces. Through user testing, interviews, and observational studies, the project will assess how these tools impact user experience, learning curves, and task completion. The study will also investigate potential improvements to enhance inclusivity and usability for this demographic.ย

This study investigates the usability challenges and mental models of account creation for low-literate users on Android devices through a mixed-method field study. By conducting the research in participants’ natural environments, we aim to reduce the barriers posed by time and resource constraints common among low-socioeconomic groups. The study will identify usability roadblocks and misconceptions regarding security and technical workflows in account creation. Findings will offer insights into both technical and human-centered improvements, providing actionable recommendations for more accessible design solutions.
